Rapido suspended for a month in Ahmedabad, Uber’s two-wheeler service also set to stop: here’s why!

Rapido's services have been halted for 30 days by Ahmedabad's Regional Transport Office (RTO) due to violations of the Aggregator Rules 2020. The usage of two-wheelers with white number plates rather than the required yellow ones for commercial ferrying operations was brought to light by complaints from rickshaw unions. Additionally, many cars lacked required insurance. Rapido was suspended because he did not reply to several notices.

According to RTO officer J.J. Patel, Rapido broke the laws by operating non-transport two-wheeler vehicles through their web app, even though the RTO had only granted them an aggregator license for three-wheeler auto rickshaws. They put the safety of the passengers at risk by continuing to drive these cars after their licenses had expired. He threatened to cancel the license permanently if the infractions continued.

Since its license only covers three and four-wheelers, Uber has been given 15 days to cease operating two-wheelers. RTO intervened after the Ahmedabad Rickshaw Association voiced concerns about these tactics.

Both platforms have become well-known for their reasonably priced services, but rickshaw unions contend that these kinds of activities violate laws and stifle free competition.
